About the island
Koh Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand ~ bordering the South China Sea in the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by more than sixty other islands. The island is district in the Surat Thani and is divided into seven sub districts: Maenam, Bophut, Maret, Taling Ngam, Namuang, Lipa Noi and Angthong.
Samui has a population of around 50,000 and is an area of 247km2. A map of the island shows the main ring road and airport road.
The island is the largest of the three paradise islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao and the 3rd largest in the whole of Thailand. Samui is 700km from Bangkok with regular means of transport connecting the island to the mainland including its own award winning airport.
People travel to Samui for all reasons. Whether looking for a relaxing beach holiday, a world class golf break, spectacular diving or to visit the many attractions, the island of Koh Samui caters for all.
The main language is Thai, but English and many other international languages are spoken and understood. The religion is Buddhism. Thai life and culture is very important and it's respectful to acknowledge the Thai way of life.
The currency is the Thai Baht and there are plenty of banks and ATMs to exchange and withdraw money.
